About the China GuruWho I am, what I do, and why I made this site
This is me, Brantley, at the Golden Summit of Sichuan's Emeishan (峨眉山) in 2017. I'm fascinated by Chinese history and culture, I speak fluent Mandarin, and I've spent a lot of time traveling in China. I studied philosophy and Mandarin at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and at Taiwan National Normal University's Mandarin Training Center, graduating from Trinity in 1997. Since then I've lived in the SF Bay Area, working as an English tutor and travel agent specializing in China travel. Now, in 2018, my family and I are relocating to my hometown of San Antonio.
I created this site in 2018 as a way to indulge my Sinophilia and also help people who share that interest. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about China or Chinese. I can't promise to answer every question, but I'll do my best.
I offer consulting and tutoring services for anyone learning Mandarin or planning to travel to China. I don't handle travel bookings myself, but I can help you craft your ideal China adventure and refer you to people and agencies who will take good care of you.
About the name "the China Guru": Yeah, it's a bit pretentious and hokey, and guru is an Indian (Sanskrit and Hindi) word, not a Chinese one. But it's memorable, so I went with it.
