Chinese for Travelers

One recommendation I would make to anyone traveling to China is to learn a little about the language—specifically, Mandarin, which is the most widely spoken dialect and the official language of both Mainland China and Taiwan. Although fluency takes years of effort to attain, of course, it’s fun, fascinating, and potentially very useful to learn some of the basics. Pinyin, the standard system used to render Chinese words in the Latin alphabet, will help you learn to pronounce Mandarin words correctly. See the Learn Pinyin page on this site for more information. For resources aimed specifically at travelers, see the Mandarin Resources for Travelers page.
