Traveling to China can seem daunting to Westerners for all kinds of reasons: the language barrier, the cultural and environmental differences, the logistics of traveling around the world. Much of China has actually gotten much more accessible to Western tourists over the years (and much more convenient and comfortable for travelers), but it’s still vital to plan your trip well and be prepared. As a veteran of the China travel industry, I think booking a tour—especially a custom, private tour—through a good travel agency can help make the whole experience more efficient and enjoyable, but for more experienced travelers it can also be fun to go it alone. Just make sure you’re well prepared. That’s what this section of the China Guru is about: helping you prepare, whether you’re booking a tour or doing it yourself.
